
While he has aspirations to become a published author, Whitman is a fourteenth-year educator who has a Master of Arts in English, a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education with an emphasis in English 6-12, and a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing, as well as an endorsement in English to Speakers of Other Languages from Wichita State University. Presently, he teaches English at Derby High School, in Derby, Kansas.
In a volunteer capacity, he is the Past President of the Kansas Association of Teachers of English and a Co-Central Region Representative for the National Council of Teachers of English Committee on Affiliates. Furthermore, he is a co-founder of the Voices of Kansas electronic journal for students published by the Kansas Association of Teachers of English and currently serves as a section editor for the journal. He is also the recipient of a 2014 Kansas Horizon Award for exemplary achievement within the first year of teaching and the 2020 High School Teacher of Excellence Award from Burrton Public Schools.
